Beware the excuses you use for filing your tax return late!

Late tax return filing penalties can be avoided if you have a ‘reasonable excuse’ for the late filing of the form

You must come up with a very good excuse for filing late for the revenue to accept that the penalty does not apply

HMRC has recently published the following top ten failed excuses for not sending in a tax return on time

1.   A self employed builder claimed that the recent death of his goldfish made him too upset to file the form

2.   A Midlands farmer claimed he had a run in with a cow

3.   A London woman claimed that after seeing a volcanic eruption on the news that she could not concentrate on anything else

4.   A self employed trader claimed that his wife would not give him his mail

5.   A Leicester hairdresser claimed that ‘my husband said the filing date was the 31st March and I believed him’

6.   A Coventry writer claimed ‘I’ve been far too busy touring the country with my one-man play’

7.   A working taxi driver claimed ‘My bad back means I can’t go upstairs and that is where my tax return is’

8.   A South East man claimed ‘ I’ve been cruising round the world in my yacht and only picking up post when I am on dry land’

9.   A London accountant claimed ‘ I have been too busy submitting my client’s tax returns’

10. A Kent financial services firm claimed that ‘Our business doesn’t really do anything’

If you do have an excuse please make sure it does not appear on the above list.  I do have some sympathy for number one  as I remember once working with someone who had to take a few days off work due to the death of a pet mouse.  People are very attached to their pets.
